Lycos US / SingTel and Lycos Asia Partnership

Lycos Asia is a 50:50 joint venture formed in September 1999 between Terra Lycos, a global Internet and communications giant and Singapore Telecommunications, Asia's leading communications company. As an interactive media company, Lycos Asia seeks to serve all the basic needs of Internet surfers in Asia, acting as their home base and primary Internet resource.

After the expansion into Lycos Europe, we set our sights on Lycos Asia. With the increased internet usage we planned to expand the Matchmaker service offering into the Asian continent providing a new revenue stream for Lycos Asia and addition users for Lycos, Inc.

As I left Lycos negotiations were almost closed and we were just awaiting the lawyers signatures on the terms we had agreed upon. Screen shots for this section of the portfolio are of what was already created in anticipation of this partnership.

 

Functionality

Before Matchmaker was launched into international markets it had to be localized for each region.

New Communities:

We identified which markets contained the most Internet users and had the highest acceptance of online dating as a means to meet people. After extensive research, we planned on launching the India, China, Hong Kong, South East Asia, and Singapore communities.

Translations:

Matchmaker is expected to launch double byte characters to further localize the language offerings for Lycos Asia. These languages will also be independent of language and function as the current suite of language offerings.

These changes made the site more representative of a local service offering to each new region. This increased the overall acceptance of the Matchmaker brand into these regions.

Advertising

The cornerstone to a new campaign launch is the advertising. Lycos Asia planned three major sections for their advertising campaign, links, banners, and e-mail blasts.

Ad Placement:

Banners are scheduled to run on sections of Lycos Asia properties localized for the language of each region where they run.

Matchmaker is billed as the premium dating service offering to Lycos Asia users. Also included in the advertising are e-mail blasts, and a link in the left nav bar for Matchmaker.

Banners and Premium dating links include tracking information which no only records the location of where the matchmaker traffic originates but also calls the Lycos Asia header to appear at the top of each Matchmaker page for users who originate in Lycos Asia.

Reporting

In order to record and report on all of the promotions for Lycos Asia a real time reporting system was developed and launched. This reporting system provided Lycos Asia with up to the day information on each aspect of their campaigns

Functionality:

The reporting systems provided reports on the revenue, new users, paid users, conversion rates, total unique visitors to the site and registration rates.

All of this information and functionality of this partnership provided Lycos Asia with a premium dating service platform and increased revenue.
